We are finishing up our biography unit and just read "The Daring Nellie Bly" in our anthology. So far we have done lots of research, started our project, and looked at picture books for inspiration. But more on the report late.
We are currently in the middle of our poetry unit and were just getting ready to dive in to a favorite, "Hate That Cat' by Sharon Creech. Last year, we read "Love That Dog" and it quickly became a favorite. Not to mention, we all formed a love of everything Walter Dean Myers (I couldn't keep his chapter books on my shelf!) and were heartbroken when we heard of his passing. Can't wait to dive in to Hate That Cat and continue hanging out with Jack and analyzing poems.
We just finished our Poe unit. We love us some Edgar Allen Poe short stories. We read The Masque of the Red Death and Cask of Amontillado which were big hits. To round out the short story unit we also red Raymonds Run and Thank You Ma'm. I can't get enough of these stories and they can't either... until it comes time for their unit test... then they're way over it.
I can't play favorites but I can say I love eighth grade. Analyzing and discussions and projects at this level are really great for them me. Let's be honest, they probably don't like analyzing and taking notes on short stories like I do.. weird right? We're also on our short story unit and completed The Lottery and The Tell-Tale Heart. Again, can you tell I love Poe? We're moving right along to The Pit and the Pendulum to round out the unit before venturing in to drama and Anne Frank.
